SDC Dialogues: Affordable Housing in Uttarakhand

September 16, 2022 |

SDC Foundation facilitated a dialogue on affordable housing in Uttarakhand in collaboration with the Urban Development Directorate, Government of Uttarakhand and PHD Chamber of Commerce.

Given the challenges of rapid urbanization, housing has emerged as a critical concern for the government and local authorities. Uttarakhand has witnessed a substantial increase in urbanization in recent years, a trend expected to continue over the next two decades. The task of providing housing to every urban household looms as a significant challenge.

To address this challenge, the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) can play a decisive role. The scheme has been instrumental in the rapid construction of affordable houses in Uttarakhand, with many already allocated and numerous others in progress. Navneet Pandey, Director of the Urban Development Directorate, highlighted that PMAY has set a target to construct 66,000 houses in the state by December 2024, with 26,000 already completed. He emphasized the significance of the Beneficiary-led Construction (BLC) and Affordable Housing in Partnership (AHP) components of the scheme.

Urban Development Minister, Uttarakhand, Mr. Premchand Agarwal, serving as the chief guest, expressed the government's continuous efforts to provide housing facilities to every citizen. He underscored the importance of planning and technology utilization in housing construction, stating that housing is a fundamental right for every individual. Mr. Agarwal also shared updates on the progress of various housing development schemes in the state, noting that two schemes out of twenty-one have been completed, while work on the remaining is underway.
