Launch of IKA & SDC Foundation's Paryavaran Express

April 30, 2025 |

Reinforcing its commitment to environmental awareness and scientific engagement, SDC Foundation launched the Paryavaran Express - a one-of-its-kind mobile environmental testing and awareness vehicle - on Wednesday at the Indian Institute of Soil and Water Conservation (IISWC), Kaulagarh, Dehradun.

The Paryavaran Express is a specially designed mobile lab that provides real-time data on crucial environmental parameters such as air quality (including PM2.5, PM10, and AQI), water quality, and noise pollution. What makes it particularly significant is its ability to reach communities directly and share environmental data through a large external screen, enabling public participation and awareness. The vehicle is fully solar-powered, making it an eco-friendly initiative aligned with sustainability goals. Future upgrades will include tools for soil testing and rainfall measurement, along with an onboard water testing kit already operational.

The launch event began with a formal ceremony at the IISWC auditorium and was followed by the flag-off of the vehicle. Dr. M. Madhu, Director of IISWC, inaugurated the initiative and emphasized the need for individuals to take everyday steps toward environmental conservation. “We all want to save the environment, but what actions are we taking? Simple steps like conserving electricity and water at home can make a big difference,” he said.

Echoing similar sentiments, senior scientist Dr. M. Muruganandam highlighted that while development is essential, it must proceed hand-in-hand with sustainability. Dr. Hemant Kulkarni of CSIR–IIP described the Paryavaran Express as an important scientific tool, stressing the importance of understanding pollution at the ground level in order to address it effectively.

The event witnessed enthusiastic support from various government departments and civil society stakeholders. Satish Tripathi, Additional Chief Officer of the Panchayati Raj Department, affirmed his department’s full backing of initiatives promoting grassroots-level environmental education. Additional Director of the School Education Department, Padmendra Saklani, acknowledged past failures in protecting the environment and urged students to lead with a renewed sense of responsibility.

Neeraj Sharma, Joint Director at the Directorate of Environment Conservation and Climate Change, spoke about the direct link between pollution and public health, calling for more trees and efforts to stop river pollution. Rahul Singhal, Managing Director of Ika Company—which has collaborated on the initiative—warned of Delhi-like pollution crises becoming widespread if urgent steps are not taken. He encouraged others to contribute to and replicate such efforts.

Speaking about the vision behind the initiative, SDC Founder Anoop Nautiyal stated that the Paryavaran Express aims to present the public with scientific and factual environmental data. He expressed hope that this transparency would inspire curiosity, foster learning, and spark behavior change toward environmental protection.

The event was conducted by Dinesh Semwal from SDC Foundation and attended by representatives from the Pollution Control Board, Zila Panchayat, Cantonment Board, and several educational institutions across Dehradun. Students and teachers from various schools also participated, lending youthful energy to the call for environmental awareness.

As the Paryavaran Express begins its journey across Uttarakhand, it promises to become a powerful platform for education, action, and change - bringing science closer to the people and enabling communities to be part of the solution to the environmental challenges we face today.
