Miyawaki Urban Forest Plantation

August 20, 2023 |

SDC Foundation is proud to have carried out Dehradun’s pilot Miyawaki Urban Forest Plantation in collaboration with Uttarakhand Forest Research Institute, SGI Foundation and the RWA of Doon Valley Officers Cooperative Housing Society.

With the help of citizens, field experts and labourers, we managed to plant over 300 native species that included Indian Laburnum (अमलतास), Neem (नीम), Grewia Optiva (भीमल), Indian Bay Leaf (तेजपात), Orchid (कचनार), Night-Flowering Jasmine (परिजात) and Moringa (सहजन, ड्रमस्टिक).

Named after botanist Akira Miyawaki, the Miyawaki afforestation method involves planting several native trees in close proximity. This allows them to effectively draw nutrients from each other and results in 10x faster growth and 30x higher density than that of a normal tree plantation. The method saves space with the planted saplings supporting each other, thereby preventing the growth of weeds. The results? Dense, thriving forests that require no maintenance once they have matured (typically after two or three years).

Together, we pledge to do our best to ensure the survival and growth of these trees that will one day stand tall as a dense urban forest!
