Uttarakhand Police Community Dialogue: Parking & Traffic in Uttarakhand

April 22, 2022 |

SDC is pleased to have played a part in the first ever Uttarakhand Police Community Dialogue on parking and traffic challenges in the state. SDC Founder Anoop Nautiyal facilitated the live conversation on Facebook with Mr. Ashok Kumar, DGP Uttarakhand Police. Thousands of people joined the online dialogue, sharing their suggestions and inputs on the issue.

Many comments related to missing policemen from their respective duty points and the rampant use of mobile phones during duty hours. Encroachment of footpaths and roads by shopkeepers with absence of parking areas was also felt by many participants. Wrong side driving and red light traffic mismanagement were highlighted by others.

One of the key comments related to Dehradun needing an aggressive push towards becoming India’s first cycling city. The initiative has to come from the very top, and all agencies must get involved. And cycling must become the daily commute - cycle to work - should be the goal, not cycle for fun. No amount of roads can counter the geometric progression of vehicles in a society that has the mindset of equating cars with status.

Other participants pointed towards the city schools getting over at nearly the same time and causing jams. To curb this, the police and school associations can team up and coordinate timings in a manner that facilitates smooth traffic flow. Most people felt that this could help with traffic management.
