SDC Foundation unveiled its latest report, “Pathways to Pilgrimage: Data Insights, Challenges and Opportunities,” at a press conference in Dehradun.
Covering 210 days and 30 weeks with 14 graphs, the report highlights key pilgrimage trends across Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri, Yamunotri, and Hemkund Sahib. In 2025, over 51 lakh pilgrims visited, with 72% arriving within the first 60 days, creating intense early-season pressure.
The study identifies critical challenges such as overcrowding, infrastructure strain, weather disruptions, and helicopter safety concerns. It also recorded 86 zero-footfall days, reflecting inconsistent visitor distribution.
The foundation recommends a shift from record-breaking numbers to safer, data-driven, and sustainable pilgrimage management. Key suggestions include capacity-based regulation, improved disaster preparedness, enhanced aviation safety, and stronger environmental protection.
The report urges authorities to prioritize long-term resilience, stakeholder coordination, and technology-enabled planning for future yatras.
