The Outdoors of Uttarakhand – Tourism, Waste & Self Employment

September 25, 2021 |

SDC Founder Anoop Nautiyal, had an online dialogue with Vaibhav Kala, an acclaimed adventure tourism practitioner and Vice President of the Adventure Tour Operators Association of India (ATOAI). He is the founder of Aquaterra Adventures and Atali Ganga. Vaibhav has deep experience of leading several climbing and river running expeditions in India and across the world. With more than three decades in the adventure tourism domain, he has a wealth of knowledge regarding challenges and opportunities from the outdoors.

The discussion focussed on the challenges faced by Uttarakhand and its tourism industry, particularly focusing on waste management and self-employment. Vaibhav suggested that all practitioners of responsible tourism in Uttarakhand should follow the best practices of removing all kinds of single use plastic items from their operations. He further said that garbage disposal bags should be replaced from plastic to gunny bags. Lastly, it is important to shortlist products with less plastic packaging and opt for reusable dispensers or open food items.
